About the shoe itself, in a nutshell

This type plays a very special role in the field of middle and long-distance running competition spikes. The Adidas Adizero Boston Avanti TYO is a timeless companion not only in competitions, but also in training, and the range of target events can be said to be wide. Overall, I can say that choosing this product specifically was perhaps the best choice of my sports career so far.

Before buying…

Before I chose this product, I paid special attention to its multifunctional nature when making my decision. I was looking for a shoe that I could also use for cross-country runs. Since I considered it important to be able to use a shoe like this for at least a year at an optimal price, I started researching the Adizero family. I heard and read several reviews about this product, and then, seizing an opportune moment when the price of the shoe, which was originally around 75,000 HUF, was reduced by almost half, I bought it.

The days of first wearing shoes

I initially tried the spikes in a sharp position during conditioning, selection, and race-pace-based partial distance training, and was surprised by how comfortable they were during faster runs. Since I personally have a wider foot, the Avanti TYO provided sufficient stability in addition to comfort.

The first cross-country race

I was primarily looking for shoes for cross-country, so the first cross-country run was the “main test” of the Avanti TYO. I have to say that it passed this test: the experiences I gained during track training are also valid for cross-country. I ran in the 5 km distance at the national finals of the Student Olympics held at Gödöllő Airport, where the track is not among the toughest cross-country terrains, but it was a surprise that while running in the shoes, I took the new terrain completely naturally – as if I had competed in shoes specially developed for this purpose.

Then came the summer competitions, the new positive surprises

I ran every single race in this shoe. On the record-breaking surface, in a tight race situation, I felt no difference compared to the previous Adizero Ambition, which I also wore at the 2022 WA U20 World Championships. Considering that I started testing the shoe with a field 5 km, I was surprised and extremely positive about its performance in the middle distances as well. At both 800 and 1500 meters, it provided the stability, comfort and base pace with which I was able to run my new personal bests in the 3023 outdoor season. Although the shoe itself does not contain carbon fibers, I felt flexible even at 800 meters.

Avanti TYO meets Mondo

The Mondo surface is not necessarily the most flexible or foot-friendly surface, especially for athletes who choose longer distances. That is why choosing the ideal competition spike requires careful attention. I have to be honest and straightforward: this was the upper red line for the Avanti TYO. Since two weeks after the competition, probably due to the adverse effects of the surface, I developed a stress fracture in my metatarsal, I thought that this could be related to the use of unsuitable shoes. One fact is certain: the Avanti TYO was designed as a multi-purpose shoe, and due to its all-round comfort, it was not found suitable – mainly from a health perspective – to perform on harder surfaces. I note and emphasize that this is a highly subjective experience, since the ball of the foot is fundamentally weak. Regardless, choosing shoes for Mondo really requires careful consideration, and I felt that the type of shoe presented was not necessarily suitable for this.

He wore it for more than a year of training and competitions

During this time, I only used this one shoe, so I used it almost every other day during the competition season. I started wearing it regularly in the spring of 2023, and it served me well until the end of the summer of 2024. Until the rain "unhealable wounds" appeared on it, it made the same positive impression on me as when I first ran into it in the weeks before the season.

Would I ever return to Avanti TYO?

All in all, yes. As I write this review, I'm already considering buying my next pair of spikes, which I'd use specifically for training. If I don't find a better value for money option, I'll definitely go for them.
